This presentation will review the psychological challenges and stresses evoked by the COVID pandemic. We will examine the relationship between emotional stress and psychopathology-not all distress is mental illness. We will discuss when professional support might be appropriate or necessary. We will consider what people might do to cope with and manage these stresses. There will be time for Q and A.

Dr. Jonathan DePierro, Clinical and Research Director of Mount Sinai’s Center for Stress Resilience and Personal Growth will discuss several evidence-based strategies for connecting to positive emotions, a sense of meaning and purpose, and building support during difficult times. The importance of each of these factors in supporting resilience will be supported by research done following prior large-scale traumas and during the current pandemic, including with health care workers. A particular focus will be placed on the importance of social support in fostering growth and recovery. (1 hour)
