SSIs pose significant patient morbidity and mortality and are among the most common health care associated infections. IPs have an important role in the prevention of SSI beyond SSI surveillance. IPs should have expert knowledge and understanding of the new CDC guidelines, along with existing and future prevention guidelines, and should serve as leaders in the implementation of best practices and prevention bundles. Implementation of new and existing guidelines in SSI prevention requires thoughtful and careful collaboration with several interprofessional and interdisciplinary teams. IPs can serve as leaders in bringing these teams together to ensure best practice. Learning Objectives:Describe the major components to the Update to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee Guideline for the Prevention of Surgical Site Infection (2017) Define the current best practice bundles for the prevention of SSIs Describe the role of the infection preventionist in bundle implementation Identify process improvement tools to assist the IP in leading multi-disciplinary teams in implementing bundled SSI reduction strategies.
