WVU Medicine, the largest health system in West Virginia, recognized the detrimental impact of false-positive blood cultures on patient safety and quality outcomes. The collaborative focus of system-wide quality leaders was to reduce and sustain blood culture rates below 3%, with a visionary goal to be 1% or less in support of its diagnostic, antimicrobial, and financial stewardship objectives.
