Join CBIC Board of Directors Steven Schweon and Andrea Flinchum to learn about the a-IPC certification. An overview of the creation of the exam, eligibility requirements, and how to maintain the certification will be provided.

Steven J. Schweon RN, MPH, MSN, CIC, LTC-CIP, CPHQ, FSHEA, FAPIC is a seasoned, board-certified infection preventionist. He first became interested with infectious diseases while serving as an Army medic in South Korea, where he supervised a microbiology department that specialized in sexually transmitted diseases. He later worked on the high technology isolation ward at Ft. Detrick, Maryland, home of “The Hot Zone.” Prior to becoming an infection preventionist, he had 14 years of experience, and achieved certification, in critical care and behavioral health nursing. Steven was also a long-term care “orderly” prior to attending nursing school. Steven has been an infection preventionist since 1995, achieving continual certification since 1997. Clinical experiences include the acute care, Long-Term Care, and behavioral health clinical settings.

Andrea Flinchum, MPH, BSN, RN, CIC, LTC-CIP, FAPIC is the program manager for the Healthcare-Associated Infection/Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention Program at the Kentucky Department for Public Health. Ms. Flinchum joined the program in 2011. Prior to joining the state health department, Ms. Flinchum worked in infection prevention and control in a large academic medical center. She has been working in the field of infection prevention and control since 2005 and has been certified since 2007. Ms. Flinchum is in her second year on the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology and is serving as the President-elect.
